Del 3 al 7 de julio el PROF. SETH SULLIVANT (Harvard University, USA)
ofrecerá en el Departamento de Matemática de la Facultad de Cs. Exactas y
Naturales de la UBA un curso sobre "Algebraic Statistics", cuyo resumen y
programa se adjuntan más abajo.
Esta visita será subsidiada por el PAV 120 de Matemática otorgado por la
Secyt. Habrá un número limitado de becas para  participantes  del interior.

Curso: Algebraic Statistics
Resumen:
Algebraic statistics advocates the use of algebraic geometry, commutative
algebra, and geometric combinatorics as tools for making statistical inferences.
The starting point for this connection is the observation that most
Statistical models for discrete random variables are, in fact, algebraic
varieties.
While some of  the varieties that appear are classical varieties (like Segre
varieties and toric varieties), most are new, and there are many challenging
open problems about the algebraic structure of these varieties.
These lectures will provide an introduction to algebraic statistics,
Emphasizing the interesting algebraic questions that arise, as well as
describing the statistical consequences of the algebraic analysis.

Programa:
1) Statistical models are algebraic varieties
2) Log-linear models, toric varieties, and Markov bases
3) Algebraic tools in statistical disclosure limitation
4) Maximum likelihood estimation
5) Phylogenetic invariants
6) Combinatorial secant varieties

Cada tema abarcará  50 minutos/ 1hora; la duración total del minicurso será
de 6 horas, repartido en 3 clases de dos horas. Las dos primeras clases serán:
· el lunes 3 de julio de 16 a 18 hs y el miércoles 5 de julio de 15 a 17 hs.
· La tercera clase se acordará con los participantes entre los días jueves 6
y viernes 7 de julio.
