"Peptidomimicry in basic
receptor pharmacology research,
 and in drug discovery for
neuroscience and cancer"

Peptidomimicry reduces large polypeptides into small functional units,
preferabily organic small molecules with agonistic or antagonistic
properties. Peptidomimicry requires the rational design and synthesis of
small molecule compounds, followed by binding and biological assays
where the pharmacological, cell biological and functional properties of
the compounds are characterized.
The initial "hits" can be used as fine probes for basic science and
receptor biology studies, while second generation improved
peptidomimetics can be used as "drug leads" in experimental medicine.
The evolution of receptor-specific agonistic or antagonistic
peptidomimetics developed in the Saragovi laboratory will be discussed,
followed by the application of these agents in animal models of
neurodegenerative disorders or cancer.
