<p>En el grupo Estadística Aplicada, investigadores dirigidos por Diana Kelmansky utilizan sus conocimientos teóricos para la resolución de problemas concretos. Algunos aplican la estadística para evaluar el crecimiento de niños; otros, para validar un modelo de detección de Alzheimer. En todos los casos, aprovechan su manejo del análisis de datos para desarrollar técnicas científicas que construirán las nuevas tecnologías del siglo.</p>

<p>Con un acto llevado a cabo en el Pabellón I de Ciudad Universitaria, quedó formalmente inaugurado un nuevo Espacio de Innovación Y-TEC en Exactas UBA. La iniciativa, a cargo de la física Silvia Goyanes, estará enfocada al diseño de nanoestructuras para la industria energética apuntando, particularmente, a la creación de nuevos materiales. Uno de esos desarrollos, ya patentado, es un polímero absorbente que permite separar el agua de los hidrocarburos.</p>

<p>Un trabajo científico que incluyó a miles de adolescentes argentinos de 13 años de edad mostró que la exposición a películas que contienen escenas que involucran el alcohol los induce al consumo de bebidas alcohólicas. El estudio también muestra que más del 50% de los chicos de esa edad ya probó el alcohol, que el 25% es bebedor regular, y que el 18% se alcoholizó al menos una vez.</p>

<p>De manos de uno de sus graduados, la Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales recibió una carta original firmada por Albert Einstein fechada en 1953. La carta, donada por el químico Federico Svarc, es una respuesta a la consulta del médico Juan Dalma sobre una posible relación entre la teoría de la Relatividad General y los estudios de Leonardo Da Vinci. El documento pasó a ser patrimonio de la Facultad y se le dio destino en la Sala de Preservación de la Biblioteca.</p>

<p>Una nueva herramienta para dispositivos Android y iPhone permite reportar los fenómenos meteorológicos que estén viviendo los usuarios. La información abastece una base de datos que hace posible optimizar las predicciones y lograr alertas más precisas de condiciones peligrosas. El propósito es crear una comunidad de observadores voluntarios. Ya suman más de 4.500 usuarios.</p>
